A battle against light pollution from all angles (That's Thanet for you!)...I had to crop down the original panorama by some way, due to having so much light at either end of the shot; from The Harbour to the right, Port Control (the best part of which is hidden behind The Lighthouse) and Ramsgate town to the left. This was my third attempt at capturing The Milky Way at this location, having failed miserably the last two times, but I learnt a few tricks along the way and although not a huge amount of detail in the night sky, about as good as I could have hoped for.
Lighthouse. 1842 by John Shaw. Cornish granite, glass and iron. Cylindrical column of granite with moulded base and entablature, the frieze inscribed 3 times: Perfugium Miseris. South western doorway with 3 panel iron door and date stone over: AD MD CCCXCII. Octagonal glass lantern with iron cornice ornamented with shells, and with ball finial and weather vane. Contains 150 watt lamp with stepped lens with light range of 7 miles. Replaced an earlier Benjamin Wyatt lighthouse which had been too close to the pier head, and damaged by overhanging ships masts.
